Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Kerri Husman, MD

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), is provided by Dr. Husman for treatment resistant conditions only, such as treatment resistant depression, PTSD, and OCD. Treatment resistance varies based on insurance company in its definition, but means that a patient has had multiple trials of different treatments, different classes of medications, augmentation of medications with a second medication, all for the current episode of the condition. Additionally, the patient has done a course of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) or ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) or PHP (partial hospitalization program) or have been hospitalized for this episode of the condition.

Ketamine is provided by IM (intramuscular) injection in the office. An intake and preparatory sessions precede medicine sessions, and integration sessions follow a medicine session. Ketamine is often offered in small group after the initial session, which is cost saving to the patient. A series of medical clearance questions are required beforehand, and some medical testing may be required prior to medicine sessions. Not everyone is a candidate for KAP, even if they are treatment resistant, due to the medical risks with this treatment.
